India climbs 13 steps on tourism ladder

The Indian tourism industry has won accolades across the world this year by climbing 13 positions-from 65th to 52nd rank-in the tourism and travel competitive index, according to a World Economic Forum report.

Foreign exchange earnings of Rs 1,12,958 crore were recorded between January and November, 2015 representing an increase of 1.0 per cent over the same period last year, which was pegged at Rs 1,11,889 crore. Foreign tourist arrivals from January to November, 2015 were 7.10 million, representing an increase of 4.5 per cent over the same period of the previous year, which was 6.79 million.

The India government’s initiatives such as the e-Tourist visa , National Mission on Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive (PRASAD), Swadesh Darshan Scheme, distribution of 'Welcome Booklet' at immigration counters to tourists arriving at international airports etc  gave a push to the tourism industry.
