A special boat would soon be launched in the backwaters of Kerala for the sole purpose of collecting septage from houseboats. Tourism Department has already approved the idea put forward by the District Tourism Promotion Council.
A typical Kerala houseboat |
The boat worth Rs.38 lakh will collect septage from about 10
houseboats daily and the process will improve the waste management system in
houseboats. The facility can be availed of in every three months.
Around 1,200 houseboats adorn the green waters of Vembanad Lake. Houseboats are supposed to empty the waste at least four times a year in order to renew the annual license for operation. However, owing to various reasons, several boats have failed to meet the deadline.
Once the mobile unit starts functioning the operators can dispose waste without canceling the scheduled trips. DTPC has already occupied itself with streamlining the houseboat operations by providing more amenities to ensure pollution-free journey.
